Xue Song will have to wait for another day to claim his first senior title in Men’s Singles as Riichi Takeshita of Japan denied him the crown at the SKYCITY New Zealand Badminton Open today. In a tiring match lasting over an hour, Riichi Takeshita has upset the 18 year old Chinese player 21-16, 16-21, 21-17 to claim the title.
Both players had periods of strong player, while looking overwhelmed at other times. Riichi Takeshita took a strong hold of the match as he pulled away to a 5-point lead after the interval, and held onto his lead to complete the first game 21-16.
The second game saw Xue Song show the form that took him to the Final at the Australian Badminton Open as he took the first rally and never looked back  winning 21-16.
The final game took the match past the one hour mark, and while Song took the lead early on, it was short lived as Takeshita regained his rhythm and scored a number of demoralising smashes against his opponent.
Takeshita (JPN) defeats Song (CHN) 21-16, 16-21, 21-17
