Dongni Ou and Yuanting Tang of China have continued to impress, eliminating top seeds and hot favourites Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Khe Wei Woon of Malaysia in a marathon final at the US $50,000 SKYCITY New Zealand Badminton Open today.
Ou and Tang began positively, taking a lead in the first game that they never relinquished. Both sides were equally matched in a number of areas, but the Chinese managed to force a number of errors from Hoo and Woon to claim the first game.
Ou and Tang looked complacent as the second game began, allowing the Malaysians to regain the initiative early on, and take 9 consecutive points. Hoo and Woon built a commanding lead, with their smashes beginning to find the target, to close out the game 21-11.
The final game took the match past the one hour mark and saw Ou and Tang on top for its entirety. The Chinese pair created a healthy buffer before allowing the Hoo and Woon to narrow the margin to just one point. Eventually however, they came out victorious 21-19 to take the crown.
Ou & Tang (CHN) defeat Hoo & Woon (MAS) 21-15, 11-21, 21-19
