WOMEN’S SINGLES FINAL: HEARTBREAK FOR AKANE YAMAGUCHI (JPN), DENG XUAN (CHN) WINS
Fifteen-year-old Akane Yamaguchi will be looking to win a title in her first senior tournament outside of Japan, as she competes against the No3 seed Deng Xuan of China in the women’s singles finals at this week’s SKYCITY New Zealand Badminton Open.
Yamaguchi defeated Xue Yao from China in the semi finals to progress to today’s final. It was in an intense match, going to three games with a score of 21-16, 14-21, 21-18.
Her opponent, Deng Xuan of China, defeated Hae Won Kang from Korea yesterday in another intense match, winning 21-15, 18-21, 21-18 to claim her spot in today’s match.

The dramatic match ended in heartbreak for 15 year old Akane Yamaguchi as her dream run through the New Zealand Badminton Open was ended by Deng Xuan of China in a tense final.
The first game saw both players hold the lead at times. After the interval, Xuan picked up 5 consecutive points to build a buffer that saw her through to claim the game 21-17.
Game two looked to be in the bag for Deng Xuan, but Yamaguchi had plenty of fight left in her, taking the lead in a 9-point run that left the Chinese player stunned and unable to recover.
Yamaguchi’s strong form continued into the third game, before Deng Xuan took control and headed towards victory. Yamaguchi showed her fighting spirit again to level the game at 20 all, before two strong smashes from Deng sealed her defeat.
